Gary Vaynerchuk on Conan O'Brien Again

Host of Wine Library TV and now author, Gary Vaynerchuk, took his internet celebrity back to Late Night with Conan O'Brien last Monday night, May 12, 2008. This was Vaynerchuk's second appearance on the show and served as an opportunity to promote his new book: Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines: Guaranteed to Inspire, Delight, and Bring Thunder to Your World.

While neither man chewed grass, dirt, or tobacco the segment was still very entertaining with Conan playing off Gary's tasting different types of wine perfectly.

As you saw in the above clip, the Gary's focus this time was to show how different food, will bring out different tastes in the wine. He also showed how inexpensive bottles can be found that taste like much more expensive wines. This has been a recurring theme on Wine Library TV.

Gary continued making the rounds in support of Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines, by making an appearance on Mad Money with Jim Cramer. On the show he commented on a few of the companies in the wine and spirits biz.

Gary Vaynerchuk on Donny Deutsh

Gary Vaynerchuk on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsh

Gary Vaynerchuk recently appeared on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsh. This interview does a good job of showcasing the other reason why Gary is such a phenomenon on the Internet right now.

He is an amazing marketer. Some of the points he attributes to success are:

Find your hoopla factor – Gary shares that he was 20 years old, but looked 13. He knew a great deal about wine and people came just to witness this unusual combination.

Get ahead of the pulse – Vaynerchuck shares that he reads 1000’s of emails and really understands where the trends are heading, but not because he reads somewhere what someone is saying the trends are.

Don’t play in the playground you are supposed – Gary travels in the social web circle and not the traditional wine connoisseur communities. This creates opportunities to cross borders and really take your business wide.

Social Equity trumps private equity – Gary understands the power of word of mouth. By interacting through Internet social networks and being transparent with his audience, he builds trust and authority in his niche.

Gary has more television appearances lined up to promote his Wine Library TV, and his new book Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines. He is a phenomenal success story and I am looking very forward to watching where he takes his brand next.

Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines

Gary Vaynerchuk's New Book

If you are tuned into today’s social web, or Web 2.0 as it is also called, you have likely heard of wine guru Gary Vaynerchuk and Wine Library TV. Wine Library TV is Gary’s daily video cast, where he takes the pretentiousness out of wine appreciation and brings it to the regular guy (or girl). Using language in his comparison’s that the average person can relate to, and armed with a New York Jets logo emblazoned spit bucket, Gary Vaynerchuk is the hottest wine critic in the country. And now he has written a book: Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines.

Gary’s celebrity and brand is huge on the Internet. His web presence alone has pushed Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines up the Amazon bestseller list. With this book and recent talk show appearances, he is just starting to cross over into mainstream media. Where his dynamic personality, and “wine for everybody” attitude will take him from here is limitless.

The wines featured in 101 Wines cover all sorts of prices, countries, grapes and styles which permit all levels of readers to expand their knowledge. The wines reviewed are also accompanied by technical notes and the story behind the vintage if you are interested in that sort of thing.

The book is as much about a down to earth wine mindset as it is about the ranking wines. Vaynerchuck wants you to select wine based on what you like and how you like it instead of following stuffy “rules” of the so called experts. Gary said on Wine Library TV, that all of the wines featured in the book are new and have not been previously reviewed on his web show.

If you have been interested in learning more about wine, but have been deterred by a perceived barrier to entry, Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines was written just for you.

Gary Vaynerchuk on Conan

Vaynerchuk Conan

Tonight, Monday May 12, 2008, marks the second appearance of Gary Vaynerchuk on Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show. He will undoubtedly be discussing his new book: Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines

His first appearance on August 1, 2007, was hugely successful.

As you saw in the above Gary Vaynerchuk Video, he takes a very unusual approach to helping Conan build his wine palate.

He has Conan first eat grass with grapefruit to illustrate that it has the same characteristics as a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Next he has them lick rocks soaked in salt water to show that it tastes like a Sancerre with its mineral flavorings. Their third wine is a red wine for which Vaynerchuk has them eat dirt, cherries and tobacco to train their palate. The final wine is a Pinot Noir, which was featured prominently in the Oscar nominated movie Sideways. Vaynerchuck and Conan remove their sweaty socks and wrap them in asparagus. They suck the sock and bite the asparagus to mimick the burgunday flavor.

I can’t wait to see what Gary Vaynerchuk on Late Night with Conan O’Brien will be like tonight. Over the past nine months Gary has continued to build his brand as well as his audience for “The Thunder Show” aka Wine Library TV, but his style hasn’t changed a bit.

Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines

As I mentioned above, Gary will most certainly talk about his new book. When Gary first announced the book on Wine Library TV, it instantly rose to number 36 on the Amazon Bestseller List. We will discuss Gary Vaynerchuk’s book in our next post.

Who is Gary Vaynerchuk

Birth of an Internet Celebrity and Marketing Genius

Legend in the making Gary Vaynerchuk was born in the USSR in 1975 and came to the US in 1978. Before gaining internet fame as the host of Wine Library TV he was the co-owner and Director of Operations of a retail wine store in New Jersey called Wine Library. Wine Library TV is a daily video blog or webcast about wine. Gary presents a down to earth, but very enthusiastic style on his show, and it is no surprise that it has become as wildly popular as it is. Gary has also been busy on the talk show circuit; making stops at Late Night with Conan O’Brien and on Ellen.

Wine Library TV

Wine Library TV features wine appreciation, reviews, information and advice. It is filmed at the Wine Library store in Springfield NJ. The episodes take place either at Gary’s desk or on his couch and last around 15 minutes. Gary will taste a few wines and rate them out of 100. But you really have to watch an episode to understand how different Gary’s approach is to wine appreciation. His metaphors are not the type you would usually associate with the often pretentious practice of reviewing wine

Viognier Friday - Episode #462

Gary Vaynerchuk is not just about video when it comes to mixing up retail with the new social web. He also uses a social wine rating site as well as popular web 2.0 destinations like Facebook and Twitter. And of course keeping up with question sent via email. The whole package enables him to truly interact with his audience, fans and, lets face it customers, on a level never before seen

Embracing the Social Web

The wine industry can be very uptight, but Gary’s approach is the complete opposite and he has been whole heartedly embraced by today’s YouTube generation. Web video of this sort is gaining significant momentum as bloggers are beginning to embrace it more as they make their leap from text, to audio podcasts to video. Web 2.0 is the social web and as enterprising individuals like Gary Vaynerchuk move to take advantage of tools like embedded video it enables them to connect with their audience on a more personal level than a regular blog allows. Replying to comments is good, but watching the star of a show, personally respond to your questions is far better. And this is extremely powerful when it comes to building a brand and trust. Gary Vaynerchuk’s rise to a notable and influential wine critic exemplifies this.

A Lesson in Internet Marketing

The added dynamic however is that Gary’s site is about more than just providing a information to those wanting to learn more about wine. He is also selling wine on the very site. That is why Gary is looked upon with such admiration by today’s Internet Marketers who are building sites for the purpose of promoting or selling a specific product. Gary went a step beyond setting up a website and simply buying PPC traffic or trying to work some SEO voodoo. He embraced an up and coming technology and turned it into an extremely effective traffic driving mechanism. He has shown internet marketers how to think and behave differently, and with an audience of 80,000 a day he has been enormously successful.

The key to being successful in this manner, however, is that you can’t be faking it. Gary Vaynerchuk has succeeded because what he is presenting is the real deal. When you bring your audience/customers as close to your business as Gary has done, they will sniff out a phony in no time. Somebody claiming to be an authority on the best stretch mark cream needs to have a sincere passion to make women better off, if they expect to build the following that Gary has. But the thing is: if you have this passion, then the cost of entry is next to nothing and there is no reason why you can’t be successful. Remember Gary’s audience tunes in to see him as much as they tune in to learn about wine. That is what you need to be emulating.

Gary is acutely aware of what he has done; this isn’t happening randomly around him. He is successfully building a brand, something all internet marketers pursue. He recognizes the power of social media and he is intentionally bending that to achieve success in his pursuits. As a case study, there are countless lessons to be learned by those wishing to elevate their own online retail presence. I feel as his notoriety continues to become more widespread, we will see many attempt to emulate what he has done.

Gary Vaynerchuck has always had his eye on being famous. With his larger than life charisma, he possessed the ingredients to make his dream come true. He has a flair for conveying his thoughts and feelings about his passion and the video medium is a natural fit. I would not at all be surprised to see Gary one day make the leap to mainstream TV; perhaps he’ll get his own show on the Food Network. Like Emeril, Gary is building his repatoir of catch phrases.

Gary Vaynerchuk Book

As wildly popular as Gary Vaynerchuk and Wine Library TV are, he has really just beginning to cross over from Web personality to mainstream media. The future looks very bright for this enterprising individual and the possibilities of where he can go from here are truly endless. With a new book coming out called “Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines” and another appearance on Conan O’Brien you can be sure that you will be hearing (and seeing!) a lot more from him.
